Comcheck Web New Comcheck FAQ Q&A Frequently Asked Questons: Troubleshooting and Software Errors

At Comcheck.net, we routinely field technical questions from COMcheck Web users. Whether you are struggling with the transition to IECC 2018, IECC 2021, IECC 2024 or facing a “Page Not Found” error, we are here to help.

Below is a compilation of the most common questions and expert answers to help you finalize your energy compliance reports.

1. COMcheck Software Updates & IECC 2024

Question: How do I run a COMcheck for IECC 2024?

Answer: The current COMcheck Web “Legacy” version is only updated through IECC 2021. To fulfill IECC 2024 requirements (effective in many jurisdictions as of 7/1/2025), you must use the “New COMcheck” platform.

Note: The New COMcheck software is still in its early stages and can be difficult to navigate. If your local code official allows it, you may find it easier to use the IECC 2021 version until the 2024 bugs are fully resolved. You can read more about the New COMcheck here.

2. Troubleshooting COMcheck Web Errors

Question: Why is the Location/Climate Zone missing from my reports?

Answer: This is often a sign of a corrupted project file within the web interface. If you have exhausted all settings and the climate zone still won’t print on your Lighting sheets, the best fix is to restart the project from scratch.

Question: Is COMcheck Web down? I’m getting a “Page Not Found” error.

Answer: COMcheck Web does experience occasional outages. If the Legacy link redirects you to a login you don’t recognize, check our status update post.

Question: My project won’t save or generate a report. What should I do?

Answer: This is frequently a browser-specific glitch. Try these steps:

  1. Switch browsers (e.g., move from Chrome to Edge).

  2. Clear your browser cache.

  3. Attempt to access the project from a different computer (Desktop vs. Laptop).

3. Envelope Compliance & Insulation

Question: My envelope is failing in the 2021 code but passed in 2015. Why?

Answer: The IECC 2021 code has significantly stricter energy efficiency requirements. For example, a project in Wisconsin that passed with an R-49 roof in 2015 now requires an R-60 roof to pass in 2021. You will likely need to increase R-values or improve U-factors to achieve compliance under the newer codes.

Question: How do I see my “percentage score” for an Alteration?

Answer: When the software is set to “Alteration,” it provides a simple Pass/Fail (Red or Green) grade rather than a percentage. If you need to see how close you are to passing, temporarily toggle the project type to “Addition” to see the numerical percentage score.

Question: I have 35% glazing and I’m failing. Where is the daylighting credit?

Answer: While daylighting controls can help with compliance, the toggle can be elusive in the web interface. If the software is not showing the credit option, consult with your building inspector; they may have a preferred format or manual calculation they accept for high-glazing projects.

4. Specific Project Types: Mixed-Use & Mechanical

Question: How do I handle a Mixed-Use building (Commercial + Residential)?

Answer: For mixed-use buildings (like retail with apartments above), you typically run a COMcheck for the Commercial Envelope and a REScheck or HERS rating for the residential portion. If your commercial envelope is failing, you must increase insulation levels on the commercial floors until the software validates the system.

Question: What if my Mechanical systems aren’t defined yet?

Answer: If you are in a design/build phase and lack fan system or equipment data, wait to complete the Mechanical section. You cannot accurately fulfill “Efficiency Credit” requirements without specific equipment data.

Question: How do I enter a walk-in cooler/freezer?

Answer: Generally, you should treat the walk-in cooler area with the same thermal approach as the rest of the kitchen/service area. Always verify with your local building inspector, as some jurisdictions have specific local requirements for refrigeration thermal breaks.

5. Printing and Signatures

Question: Why is the signature line missing from my PDF?

Answer: This is usually a PDF viewer issue rather than a COMcheck error. Some versions of Adobe Acrobat have signature protection that hides the line. Try opening and signing the document in Foxit Reader or simply print, sign manually, and scan the document.
